1.  Why need BESS?

As the global "carbon neutrality" strategy continues to advance, intermittent and volatile renewable energy sources such as wind, solar panel, and water have brought many challenges to the power system.

As an important part of the new energy industry, the energy storage industry is undoubtedly a dark horse that is far ahead.

 

2.  Briefly BESS Introduction

2.1  Energy storage unit

This is the core part of the energy storage system, which includes batteries, supercapacitors, flywheels, compressed air energy storage and other equipment. These devices are connected to the power network in a certain way to store and release energy.

 

2.2  Charging control unit

This part is mainly responsible for controlling the charging process of the energy storage unit. It can achieve fast charging of the energy storage unit by controlling the voltage and current in the power network.

 

2.3  Discharge control unit

This part is mainly responsible for controlling the discharge process of the energy storage unit. It can achieve stable discharge of the energy storage unit by controlling the voltage and current in the power network.

 

2.4  Thermal management system

This part is mainly responsible for cooling or heating the energy storage unit to ensure that the energy storage unit works under safe working conditions.

 

3.  BESS Application

generally speaking, energy storage is to store electricity and use it when needed. An energy storage project is like a huge "power bank" that needs to be charged, stored and supplied. From production to use, electric energy generally goes through these three steps:

producing electricity (power plants, power stations) → transporting electricity (power grid companies) → using electricity (households, factories).

 

From the perspective of the entire power system, the bess application can divided into 3 major parts:

   Power generation side:

      Mainly built in various thermal power plants, wind farms, and photovoltaic power stations. It is a    supporting facility used by various types of power plants to promote the safe and stable operation    of the power system; power peak regulation, auxiliary dynamic operation, system frequency    modulation, and renewable energy Grid connection, etc.;

   On-grid side:

      Service providers mainly include power generation enterprises and power grid companies;      alleviating grid congestion, delaying expansion and upgrade of power transmission and distribution    equipment, and timely peak and frequency regulation according to regional grid load;

   User side:

      It refers to energy storage power stations built under different user power consumption    scenarios and based on user demands to reduce users’ electricity costs and reduce power outage    losses; self-use of power, peak power Valley price difference arbitrage, capacity electricity fee    management and improving power supply reliability, etc.

3.1  Power generation side

Energy storage systems can improve existing photovoltaic power stations with high grid electricity prices. Solving the phenomenon of photovoltaic power plant abandonment, eliminating random fluctuations of photovoltaics, and improving the quality of power output of photovoltaic power plants can make photovoltaic power dispatchable and participate in auxiliary services such as peak and frequency regulation.

AC coupling and DC coupling are two common ways to connect energy storage systems. AC coupling refers to connecting the energy storage unit and the power network through an AC transformer, while DC coupling refers to connecting the energy storage unit and the power network through a DC converter.

3.2  On-grid side

The energy storage system can realize peak and frequency regulation control, monitor load fluctuations in real time, quickly respond to grid dispatch, and improve grid frequency stability. The energy storage system can also dynamically adjust the reactive power of the grid according to changes in the power factor of the grid, reducing system losses and ensuring reliable operation of the grid.

3.3  User side

Energy storage systems can be used to achieve peak-to-valley arbitrage if the price difference between industrial and commercial peak and valley electricity is large. In addition, industrial and commercial energy storage can also reduce transformer capacity fees, reduce the maximum demand electricity fee of transformers, delay the construction of power distribution capacity expansion, save expenses, and serve as a backup power supply. , improve power supply reliability.

4.  The Conclusion of Customer Demand

There are 6 kinds of customer:

01 The transformer design capacity is insufficient and cannot support the gradually increasing load demand. Overloading causes safety problems.

02 In areas where the power grid is unstable, it can replace diesel generators to establish electricity support to support the load operation in the network in the short or long term.

03 Scenarios such as hospitals and base stations have sensitive loads and require high power supply stability. Unstable power supply from the power grid, excessive voltage, poor power quality, etc. will cause damage to the equipment.

04 Industrial and commercial parks want to reduce carbon emissions and achieve low-carbon or even zero-carbon production by adding optical storage systems.

05 Photovoltaic, solar are already intermittent and volatile, but the electricity consumption of enterprises. Demand remains stable. Industrial and commercial energy storage can store excess electricity from solar or wind energy and release it when energy is insufficient, thereby achieving a stable energy supply.

06 Those enterprises/scenarios with large demand for electric energy, such as industrial parks, manufacturing, data centers, etc., usually have highly fluctuating power demand.
